ADHD Fog Rolled in Last Night

This is what adhd fog looks like. Photo my own

One of the more frustrating things about depression and ADHD is the fog that can come out of nowhere and stop everything. I had a fairly productive day yesterday, but then the bottom fell out late.

I went for a long walk early on, and then to the gym late in the afternoon for a more strenuous workout. I got some writing done and generally thought I was having a good day. After supper, I was thinking about what I wanted to do the rest of the evening. Often I go for another walk, but I thought I didn’t need to after already having four miles in for the day. I thought about playing music, maybe more writing or working with some photos.

While I was considering what to do, I happened to open social media. I started scrolling mindlessly, and next thing I know it’s 11 p.m., and the evening was gone. I was not having a good time. It was miserable, but I couldn’t break the grip it had on me. I could have done anything I wanted to do, but I was doing nothing that I wanted to do.

That little stretch of indecision might be what lets the fog in. When the brain is already working harder than most to manage attention and follow-through, even a few open choices can tip it over. The system that should help you decide and start just slows down, and everything gets cloudy.

This morning the fog is still around, but thinner. I’m moving through it the same way I do most days—one small thing at a time.
