I Am My Own Worst Enemy
I find myself not doing the things I want to do. I know the things that would please me and make me happy. Then I feel depressed because I don’t feel good.
I know exactly what a good day looks like.
I know what I should do.
There’s nothing physically stopping me. The only real obstacle is me.
This is the cruel loop of depression and ADHD: I have the knowledge, but I lack the motivation or executive function to act. So I sit there staring at the wall, doing nothing, while feeling worse and worse about it.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this.
We know what would help — going for a walk, creating something, exercising, reaching out to someone — yet we stay stuck.
This feeling is exactly what I wrote about in my longer piece, Riding out a bad ADHD Day.
Some days the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it feels impossible to cross.
Does anyone else struggle with this?
What finally helps you break the cycle on those days when you’re your own biggest obstacle?
