Giants in the Desert
The classic western movie seems to always take place in Texas, and some were filmed there. The film “Giant” with James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor, was made just outside the small town of Marfa, Texas. Its on Highway 90, just a few miles to the west of town.
Larger-than-life billboards mark the spot where the movie was filmed, which is on a farm along Highway 90 west of Marfa. The murals were put up in 2018 by a local artist.
Marfa is an artsy town about 20 miles from the Mexican border and 40 miles north of Big Bend National Park.
It is a surprise to be driving down the highway and see these people rising up out of the desert floor. But it was on this farm that most of the movie was made.
The movie was made in 1956 and was about a couple moving to Texas and getting involved in the oil industry there.
